CHAPTER TWELVE

Excitement hummed in Rasheed's veins as he pulled into the parking lot behind the football stadium. Percy hadn’t said anything more about Nick, but as days went by, he seemed to calm down. If he was hiding something, he’d tell Rasheed soon enough, of that he was sure.

Right now, Coach Thomas was out on the field running offense drills. They weren't due back for preseason activities for another month, but for as long as he could remember, Coach T had made a summer game plan. One of the reasons they'd been so successful under him, and it gave the kids something to do other than sit on their asses.

He cut the ignition and jogged across the field. When Coach turned, he smiled and let loose a deep belly laugh. “Hey, boys, come over here! Local living legend returns.”

Rasheed laughed with him and came to a stop a few feet away. “Whatever, old man. We all know that ain't the truth.”

“For sure. That was a terrible throw. You were just lucky Lamprey has good hands.”

He tried not to bristle at the man’s name even as he laughed. He’d taken one hell of a hit when he made his championship-winning pass to Lamprey. But being quarterback meant you got all the blame. And, in this case, all the glory. He'd take it.

The players huddled around him, throwing rapid-fire questions at him. He did his best to answer, why he hadn’t gone pro, why he hadn't come home—that was a doozy—what he was doing back now, was he going to be at all their games, was he going to be a coach. Thomas let them go for a few minutes before blowing his whistle.

“You still got that old thing? I'm surprised it hasn't rotted from the inside out,” Rasheed teased.

Thomas winked. “Wouldn’t stop me from using it if it had.”

He crinkled his nose and swallowed hard. No doubt Thomas was telling the truth.

Coach lined the boys up for their next drill and sent him off to help the quarterback. Just like that, back to business.

Rasheed worked with him, showing him how to properly grip the ball, focus on his target, and repeated the same action until his throw went from slightly wobbly with no real velocity, to an arrow strike at the wide receiver.

Behind them, Coach Thomas bellowed. “That's what I'm talking about! He still got it. See, boys, this is what I mean. Once you learn those fundamentals, no one can take them away, no matter how far out the game you are.”

They nodded, much the way he had decades before. Politely, but having heard the same thing before. He supposed all players did that.

Coach had him flip and work with the defense, huddling up with the free safety. He was a quiet kid, and when Rasheed asked his name, he could barely make out the whispered “Mike.”

“Well, Mike, we’re going to show you how to anticipate the QB’s move so you can cover as much ground as possible.”

“Won't be a problem,” the wide receiver who’d just caught the pass from the quarterback said.
